Verstappen Snatches Baku FP3 Honors as Russell's Practice Dominance Crumbles

Max Verstappen put on a masterclass when it mattered most, storming to the top of the FP3 timesheets at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix and snatching the honors from George Russell with an absolutely brilliant late-session push. The Red Bull ace's 1:43.922 on soft tyres proved just enough to edge out the Mercedes driver by 0.099 seconds, giving the reigning champ a real confidence boost heading into qualifying. Russell had looked untouchable through the opening practice sessions on Thursday, but Friday's shifting conditions proved a different beast entirely.

The Baku streets threw everything at the grid during FP3, with gusts exceeding 30mph turning the circuit into a proper test of nerve and precision. Drivers got caught out left and right, with Lance Stroll and Charles Leclerc both tangling with the barriers at Turn 7, while Verstappen's Red Bull got a knock heading into Turn 15. The wind left Max complaining his car was jumping around like a kangaroo and feeling numb in the high-speed sections, yet he still managed to find that extra tenth when it counted. Lewis Hamilton made a late dash to third, capitalizing on slipstreaming down the main straight to slot in just 0.111 seconds behind Verstappen.

McLaren suffered their own headaches when Lando Norris had to park his car in the middle of FP3 after 20 minutes to let his engineers sort out a high-speed handling issue. The papaya squad got him back out relatively quickly, but it highlighted just how tricky the conditions were playing for everyone. Andrea Kimi Antonelli rounded out the top four for Mercedes, posting 1:44.273 to edge out Ferrari's Charles Leclerc. The gusts and wind shifts that dominated Friday's running could prove absolutely nightmarish during qualifying later today, so expect the drivers to have their hands full when it really counts.

Verstappen's late heroics suggest Red Bull might have some serious pace tucked away for the shootout, though Russell's Mercedes machinery looked legitimately quick throughout, even if George couldn't quite hang on when the pressure mounted. The medium tyres showed promise early on, but everyone switched to softs when qualifying simulations began, and that's where Verstappen found his edge. With conditions forecast to remain windy for the rest of the day, keeping that car planted and extracting maximum pace from your tyres will be absolutely crucial come qualifying.
