Even with a reported 25.5 million pound contract on the table for 2027, Sainz is apparently walking away. Schumacher reckons there's now tension brewing between the driver and team principal James Vowles over how badly things have gone this season. Williams started 2026 in rough shape due to production delays, and their upgrade package coming at Azerbaijan won't fix all their issues. For Sainz, who's only scored six points and sits 15th in the drivers' standings, staying put probably doesn't look great for his career.

So where might Sainz go? Schumacher thinks the 31-year-old has his eye on Red Bull or McLaren for next year, though Aston Martin and Alpine have also been mentioned as possibilities. The Dutch driver can now exit Red Bull thanks to a clause that became active at the summer break, and there's been plenty of tension between him and the team. If Verstappen leaves Red Bull, that could create an opening for Sainz to rejoin the front runners.
