Russell Takes Dominant Baku Pole as Antonelli Crashes Out of Q1

George Russell has absolutely owned qualifying at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, securing pole position after being fastest in every single session. The Mercedes driver was simply on another level around the Baku street circuit, leaving the rest of the field chasing shadows. It's the kind of performance that sets you up perfectly for Sunday's race, though Russell knows better than to get too comfortable with so many quick drivers still in the mix.

The big story though is championship leader Kimi Antonelli's early exit. The Sauber driver hit the wall during Q1 and ended up qualifying a disappointing 16th, a massive blow to his championship hopes. Antonelli admitted it was his own mistake, saying he got more front end grip than expected when he turned in. Not the position you want to be starting from when you're leading the title fight.

Charles Leclerc secured second on the grid for Ferrari, with Oscar Piastri taking third for McLaren. Lando Norris had a tougher day in Q3, qualifying fifth after pushing a bit too hard trying for pole and running out of traction. He reckoned P2 was possible but decided to go for broke, which tells you everything about his mentality.

Lewis Hamilton could only manage sixth in the Ferrari, frustrated that Mercedes just had too much straight-line speed. Max Verstappen qualified eighth and was absolutely fuming with his session, blaming engine issues and battery problems that snowballed through his qualifying runs. The Red Bull looked strong all weekend but completely fell apart when it mattered.

The rest of the top ten saw Yuki Hadjar in fourth, then Norris, Hamilton, Pierre Gasly, Verstappen, and Carlos Sainz rounding out the positions. Sainz was actually buzzing after getting into Q3 for the first time this season in the Williams, hoping the small upgrade they brought will help them claw back some points on Sunday. It's been a rough campaign for Williams but there are little signs of progress building.
