Power Unit Crisis Deepens at Sepang: Ferrari Maxed Out, Ten Drivers Already Over Allocation

The 2026 power unit situation just got properly messy at Sepang. Three more drivers have now gone beyond their seasonal component allowance, pushing the total count to ten. Isack Hadjar, Arvid Lindblad and Franco Colapinto all introduced parts this weekend that exceed what the FIA regulations permit, and the grid penalty situations are going to get complicated fast.

Ferrari's position is particularly tight right now. Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton have both hit their allocation ceiling across every major power unit category. They're still technically within the rules, but they've got zero wiggle room left. That means any engine failure, any turbo issue, any exhaust problem between now and the end of the season could force grid penalties. For a team fighting for titles, that's a proper headache. Reliability becomes absolutely crucial when you're sitting on the edge like this.

The situation extends beyond just Ferrari. Isack Hadjar is in proper trouble with seven ICEs used already, way over his permitted four. Arvid Lindblad has exceeded his allocation in three separate categories simultaneously, which could trigger a substantial penalty. George Russell and Max Verstappen are both right on the limit in most components. Even Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll, both at Aston Martin, are running dangerously close to penalties across multiple categories.

The 2026 power unit regs allow just four engines, four turbochargers and four exhaust sets per driver for the entire season. Add in the limits on MGU-Ks, energy stores and PU control electronics, and teams have got to manage components like they're rationing fuel during a fuel crisis. Several drivers still have some margin, but it's incredibly tight across the grid. One more issue for most drivers and they're facing consequences.

This is shaping up to be a proper tactical nightmare for team principals over the remaining races. Every component decision now carries weight. Every reliability issue compounds the problem. Ferrari knows that if either Leclerc or Hamilton suffer an engine failure, they're looking at penalties that could cost them championships. That's the reality of where we're at just a few rounds in.
