Piastri's Brilliant Malaysia Braking Defense Leaves Palmer Seriously Impressed

Oscar Piastri's racecraft shone through at the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia, even if his McLaren didn't have the pace to deliver the results he wanted. While Max Verstappen was taking the win and Lewis Hamilton was stealing the headlines with his comeback drive, Piastri was quietly putting on a masterclass in wheel-to-wheel racing. The Australian had started on the wrong tyre strategy and found himself in a tough spot, but he clawed his way back to finish where he started, in P6.

The standout moment came during the final safety car restart when Piastri found himself under serious pressure from Liam Lawson. The New Zealander had shown pace all day and was looking sharp on the restart, immediately getting stuck into Piastri for the position. What followed was a textbook piece of defensive driving that caught the attention of commentator Jolyon Palmer. Piastri's braking point was absolutely pristine, executing a move that left Palmer genuinely blown away. In his commentary, Palmer praised the overtake, calling it 'sublime' and acknowledging that while Lawson had the guts to take on a McLaren with only a few laps remaining, Piastri's response was pure racing craft.

Despite the solid personal performance though, Piastri was frustrated with how his car was performing overall. McLaren's recent upgrades haven't delivered, and the team has actually gone backwards since scoring victories with Lando Norris in Hungary and Zandvoort. After the race, Piastri was honest about the situation, saying the team wasn't quick enough to fight for wins and that they desperately need to improve. He acknowledged that McLaren and Ferrari are in a similar ballpark right now, but that ballpark is nowhere near where they need to be for race wins. With upgrades clearly not working as planned, Piastri knows McLaren has some serious work to do if they want to get back into championship contention.

Still, there's no denying that Piastri proved once again why he's one of the grid's brightest talents. Even on a difficult day where the strategy didn't work and the car lacked pace, he extracted every bit of performance available and produced moments of genuine class. That's the kind of driving that wins championships down the line, and it's something McLaren will be banking on as they try to turn their season around.
