Mercedes' Worrying Slide Has Experts Asking a Scary Question for 2027

Mercedes has absolutely owned this season. George Russell and Kimi Antonelli won the first six races, and the team's got a massive 134-point lead with just five or six rounds left. The W17 started the year in a different league compared to everyone else. But here's the thing, and it's got people genuinely concerned, the chasing pack has caught up in a way nobody expected.

Jolyon Palmer, the former Renault driver, has laid out the uncomfortable truth on the F1 Nation podcast. He's describing Mercedes' trajectory as a 'big concern,' and when you look at how Ferrari, McLaren, and Red Bull have all started closing the gap and matching the Silver Arrows, it's pretty stark. Mercedes' recent upgrade hasn't delivered the performance gains they were counting on, leaving them vulnerable heading into the final stretch.

The real issue isn't this year though. Palmer's raising a question that's keeping Mercedes up at night. How on earth are they supposed to fight for the championship next year if everyone else keeps improving at this rate? With both titles basically locked up, Toto Wolff's team has got a golden opportunity right now to focus on completely understanding their car and sorting out their development process.

Palmer reckons that's the priority now for Mercedes, not winning races. They need to figure out why their updates aren't working as expected and make absolutely certain their Brackley factory can turn parts into genuine performance gains on track. Because if they can't get that sorted over the remaining races, 2027 could be a proper struggle. The dominance they're enjoying right now could evaporate pretty quickly if they don't nail down their development direction.

With three full practice sessions back on the traditional F1 schedule, Mercedes can finally get quality time to diagnose their car and get back to winning ways before shifting focus to next season's challenge.
