George Russell averaged 1:39.611 on the medium tyres during FP2's long-run simulations, setting the benchmark that everyone else is now chasing. But here's the thing, this circuit is so fresh that interpreting the data is genuinely tricky. Fuel loads, engine modes, tyre conditions, it all matters massively when you're trying to work out who's actually quickest.

Ferrari certainly looked competitive throughout the day, with Charles Leclerc running race simulations on the soft tyre and averaging 1:41.679. Lewis Hamilton put in solid work for Mercedes on the mediums, clocking 1:40.568, which puts him right in the mix with the leading pace. Oscar Piastri also got some long-run data in for McLaren, though Lando Norris couldn't contribute after a gearbox issue put him out of action entirely on Friday.

Red Bull's picture is genuinely intriguing because their race pace looked closer than their single-lap performance suggested. Max Verstappen switched to the soft tyre for his long-run and averaged 1:39.952 across six laps, which is properly competitive. However, the Dutchman reported that his steering felt heavy during the session, though his engineer reckoned it wasn't serious enough to abandon the run. On a circuit as unforgiving as this new one, with barriers right there waiting to punish mistakes, steering feel is absolutely critical.

The reality is that Friday's data should be treated with healthy skepticism. Track conditions evolved throughout the day, everyone's still learning this place, and the variables are enormous. What we can say is that Mercedes have shown real consistency and pace, Ferrari aren't far away, and Red Bull will likely be closer than the final timesheets suggest once we get more running in. Saturday's FP3 should paint a clearer picture before qualifying, but right now it's shaping up to be a genuinely interesting fight.

The Madring itself threw in a curveball when Arvid Lindblad crashed during FP2, bringing out the red flag and disrupting the session.
