McLaren Turns Austin Qualifying Disappointment into Solid Points Haul with Strategic Masterclass

McLaren bounced back from a rough qualifying session at the United States Grand Prix to bag decent points on race day at Austin. Lando Norris climbed from eighth on the grid to fifth at the finish, while Oscar Piastri brought home seventh place. It wasn't quite the podium haul the team had hoped for coming into the weekend, but the MCL40 showed genuine pace and the drivers executed a tactically sharp performance to make the most of it.

The key was McLaren's willingness to ignore the qualifying result and attack the race with a clear head. Both drivers started on medium tyres, unlike Red Bull and Ferrari who went with softs, and the strategy team had a whole range of pit stop scenarios prepared depending on how the race unfolded. Early on, it became clear that Lando had the stronger one-lap pace on the hard compound, so the team made an aggressive call to swap the drivers' positions after just eight laps. Oscar went in for his first stop on lap fifteen for hard tyres, with Lando following a lap later, initially setting up a potential two-stop strategy.

As the race played out, both drivers ended up running just a single pit stop despite an early stop at lap fifteen. Russell's five-second penalty for running off track helped McLaren's cause, and Lando's blistering pace allowed him to undercut the Mercedes and Red Bull's Isack Hadjar. When Max Verstappen committed to a second stop on lap thirty-one, Lando was elevated to second place. From there, he converted to a one-stop strategy, hoping for a safety car that never came, but he had enough in hand over Hadjar to secure fifth.

Oscar's afternoon was more of a defensive masterclass. George Russell came at him hard multiple times in the final stint, closing into DRS range in waves before dropping back. The Australian had to stay sharp for the final twenty laps with the Mercedes never far from his rear wing, but he kept Russell at bay by just 1.6 seconds at the chequered flag. It was a textbook example of smart defensive driving and strategic flexibility, exactly what McLaren needed to salvage a weekend that looked grim on Saturday.
