Antonelli Wins at Austin but Championship Wait Continues to Mexico

Kimi Antonelli absolutely dominated the United States Grand Prix at Austin, converting his pole position into a commanding victory. The young Italian driver had a brilliant start and immediately built up a two-second lead within the opening lap. With Mercedes playing a masterclass strategy around the high tire degradation at the Circuit of the Americas, Antonelli was in complete control all day long. Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen rounded out the podium, but they were nowhere near close enough to trouble the dominant leader.

Here's the thing though, Antonelli's championship party will have to wait another week. Despite taking the checkered flag, the Mercedes driver couldn't mathematically clinch the world title because Lewis Hamilton and George Russell didn't deliver enough points. Hamilton finished fourth while Russell ended up in eighth after picking up a five-second penalty for leaving the track during a battle with Oscar Piastri. That means Antonelli's coronation gets pushed to the Mexican Grand Prix next week.

Red Bull had a proper shocker out in Texas. Max Verstappen was complaining about his car almost immediately, first worrying about a potential puncture before discovering engine braking issues. His pit crew gave him a sluggish 3.9-second stop during his second visit, adding to his frustration. Isack Hadjar meanwhile was visibly frustrated on the radio about Red Bull's strategy choices, and things got worse when he suffered a throttle issue limiting his power to just 40 percent.

Ferrari's qualifying collapse got quickly forgotten when both their drivers flew past Hadjar at the start. Leclerc even made moves on Verstappen and eventually climbed to second place, showing some real pace recovery. Over at McLaren, Lando Norris executed a brilliant one-stop strategy for much of the race. Oliver Bearman's day fell apart with a collision penalty and eventual retirement, while Liam Lawson secured ninth place and continued to impress as the best driver outside the traditional front four teams.
