The MCL40 had a fundamental problem right from the start, a shorter wheelbase that just couldn't generate enough downforce compared to what Mercedes and others were running.

So McLaren went into damage control mode, rolling out a revised floor plus new front and rear brake ducts at Hungary. These weren't isolated changes either, they came after earlier tweaks to the front wing, leading floor edge, bargeboards and even the engine cover. The problem? That restraint from Mercedes might prove wise if teams run out of money trying to chase dominance.
