Alpine have just pulled off a massive move, confirming Mike Elliott as their new chief technical officer. If that name sounds familiar, it's because the British engineer spent years at Mercedes and absolutely earned Lewis Hamilton's respect. Elliott's joining Enstone after stints at McLaren, Renault, and most recently Mercedes, where he became a key figure in the team's dominant era.

Elliott was Mercedes' head of aerodynamics from 2012 onwards and played a huge role in the Silver Arrows' success throughout the 2010s. He worked his way up the ranks and became integral to how the team developed its cars. During an interview with the BBC after his departure from Mercedes, Lewis Hamilton didn't hold back about his admiration for the guy. Hamilton said he'd always been in awe of Elliott's intelligence and that whenever he had a question about the car, Elliott always had the answer ready to go.

The timing of Elliott's exit from Mercedes wasn't ideal though. He left during the 2023 season after the team announced he'd swap roles with James Allison, who would take back overall responsibility for car design. Six months later, Elliott was gone completely. Hamilton made it clear he wasn't involved in that decision and emphasized how much he valued working with Elliott, having known him since his McLaren days.

Elliott's departure came after the new 2022 regulations hit Mercedes hard. The team's zero-pod philosophy didn't work out, and suddenly they went from being utterly dominant to fighting for podiums. It was a rough period, but Elliott's reputation as one of F1's smartest engineers remains intact. Now at Alpine, he'll oversee all technical and engineering functions at Enstone while David Sanchez continues leading car development.

This is a massive signing for Alpine as they look to climb back up the grid. With Pierre Gasly recently grabbing a pole position at Monza, the team's got momentum. Adding someone of Elliott's caliber could be exactly what they need to mount a serious title challenge in the coming years.
