Leclerc Sets the Pace at Monza, Ferrari Locks Out the Top Two in FP1

Charles Leclerc absolutely nailed the opening practice session at the Italian Grand Prix, setting a blistering time of 1:23.008s on the medium tyres that nobody could touch all afternoon. The Ferrari driver's effort came at a moment when most of the grid had switched to softer rubber for their qualifying-style runs, making it all the more impressive that his medium-tyre lap proved untouchable. Lewis Hamilton backed up his teammate to give Ferrari a commanding 1-2, finishing just 0.173s behind, while Mercedes' George Russell claimed third a further 0.131s down the road.

The session had its share of drama and disruptions that kept things interesting for the 90 minutes. Colton Herta's afternoon came to an abrupt halt when he was forced to stop his Cadillac with a suspected hydraulic problem, triggering a red flag with about half the practice remaining. When the action resumed, the track got busier than ever as drivers pushed hard to complete their programmes, but Leclerc's early masterpiece remained the session's best effort. Traffic proved to be a headache throughout, particularly for some of the four rookies on track, with Alpine's Paul Aron finding himself in hot water more than once after holding up other drivers.

Liam Lawson put in another solid performance for Red Bull, continuing his stand-in role while Max Verstappen's regular partner remains sidelined through injury. The New Zealander snagged fourth place, followed by Kimi Antonelli, who sported a special Valentino Rossi-inspired helmet in honour of his home race. Lando Norris struggled a bit and slipped back to sixth, while the rest of the grid spread out behind them. The usual cast of substitutes made appearances as well, with Ayumu Iwasa running Max Verstappen's car and Yuki Tsunoda back in the Racing Bulls seat.

The session set up an intriguing afternoon as teams and drivers dove into their data ahead of FP2. Ferrari looked sharp on their home track, which is exactly what you'd expect given the straight-line power advantage they're running this season. Hamilton's strong showing suggested Mercedes could be competitive enough to trouble the Tifosi, while the midfield chaos with all the rookie appearances added some unpredictability to what's shaping up to be a cracking Italian Grand Prix weekend.
