Leclerc Dominates Mexico City Friday Sessions as Ferrari Flexes High-Altitude Muscle

Charles Leclerc has absolutely owned Friday at the Mexico City Grand Prix, topping both practice sessions and giving Ferrari a real statement of intent heading into the weekend. The Monegasque driver's best lap of 1m17.827s in FP2 was a tenth faster than anyone else on the grid, with the high-altitude track playing perfectly into Ferrari's hands so far. It's a clean sweep that puts Leclerc in the box seat as we head toward qualifying, and you've got to think the team's smaller turbo setup is really working the thin air.

The action wasn't without drama though. Max Verstappen and Liam Lawson tangled in the Stadium section during FP2, making wheel-to-wheel contact and littering the track with debris. Both drivers got summoned to the stewards after the session, so we might hear more about that one later. Once things got going properly, Lando Norris in the McLaren pushed Leclerc hard on the softs and actually went top for a moment, but the Ferrari man simply turned up the wick and pulled clear with a 1m17.827s that nothing could touch. Norris finished second, just 0.103s adrift, while George Russell's Mercedes slotted into third, incredibly close at 0.106s down.

Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli sits fourth and needs only a top-nine finish on Sunday to clinch the 2026 championship, even if Russell wins the race. The pressure's on for the reigning world champion McLaren driver, but Leclerc and Ferrari are clearly in the mood to fight. Verstappen ended up fifth in his Red Bull, while the rest of the top ten was rounded out by Isack Hadjar, Arvid Lindblad, Pierre Gasly, Liam Lawson, and Oscar Piastri.

Lewis Hamilton's session was pretty rough though. The seven-time champion had to park his Ferrari at Turn 3 after reporting power issues, completing just 13 laps and getting classified 11th. That means he missed out on crucial long-run data as the teams switched to race simulation with 20 minutes left. Gabriel Bortoleto had a mare with technical gremlins on his Audi and managed only 12 laps, finishing slowest on the grid. Sergio Perez, celebrating his 300th Grand Prix, was 18th in the other Cadillac.

Ferrari's pace fits the pre-weekend chat about their high-altitude advantage, and Leclerc's been fastest in every session so far. But don't get too carried away yet, because Mercedes and McLaren are still right there within a tenth and a half. This is exactly the kind of Friday performance where Ferrari shows their hand, so final practice tomorrow could tell us a whole different story. Qualifying at 5 PM ET will be absolutely crucial.
