Leclerc On Top in Mexico FP2 as Verstappen and Lawson Clash at Turn One

Charles Leclerc's on fire at Mexico City right now. The Ferrari driver has topped the second practice session with a time of 1:18.257, putting him four tenths clear of his team-mate Lewis Hamilton who's running the same medium compound tyres. Leclerc was already quickest in FP1, so he's clearly found something that works around this track, and Ferrari's looking properly sharp heading into the weekend.

Drama's been brewing out on track already. Max Verstappen and Liam Lawson got tangled up at Turn One, with the pair seemingly making contact during their battle. There was debris left scattered across the circuit that needed clearing, and it looks like there might've been some tension between the Red Bull driver and the Racing Bulls man. Not the most harmonious of moments, but it's shaping up to be a proper competitive battle this weekend.

Lando Norris had a bit of a shocker too. The world champion locked up at Turn One and ended up on the grass while running fifth on the yellow medium tyres. Oscar Piastri briefly led the times on the hard compound before Hamilton nicked the spot, and Norris himself's worked up to third. Meanwhile, Gabriel Bortoleto's been stuck in the Audi garage with his car having issues, though Freddie Slater got some track time in FP1 in the Brazilian's place.

It wasn't all smooth sailing for others either. Esteban Ocon had to pit complaining of no power steering, describing it as feeling super heavy, while Oliver Bearman's Haas team decided to change his engine between sessions to try and get him back on track. The British driver managed to get going again after pulling off, but Haas have got some work ahead of them to sort out their setup for Sunday's race.

Off-track, Fernando Alonso's been stirring the pot. The Aston Martin driver's come out swinging with criticism about the overall level of talent on the grid, particularly at the back, saying there's a very low level of driving out there. He's been doubling down after an incident with Alex Albon at the US Grand Prix, though the Williams driver took it diplomatically, showing nothing but respect for the two-time champion despite the comments.
