Leclerc Cautious on Ferrari Gains as Antonelli Eyes Historic Title at Austin

Charles Leclerc topped both practice sessions on Friday at the US Grand Prix, but the Ferrari driver's pumping the brakes on expectations despite his team's new upgrade package. The Monegasque was quick in the timesheets, yet he's being realistic about what it all means. Leclerc reckons Friday showed just a small step forward rather than the game-changing leap everyone's hoping for. Sometimes being fastest in practice doesn't guarantee anything come race day, and Leclerc knows it.

The track conditions at Circuit of the Americas have everyone talking, and not in a good way. The bumps are proper brutal out there, especially in the first sector. Max Verstappen called them unacceptable earlier in the week, and Leclerc agrees completely. It's the kind of thing that can shuffle the grid around and make Saturday's qualifying a total lottery. Poor track surface or not, qualifying is tonight and that's when it counts.
Meanwhile, Kimi Antonelli has a chance to make history this weekend. The Mercedes driver and championship leader needs to win Sunday's race while teammates George Russell finishes ninth or lower and Lewis Hamilton finishes fifth or lower to seal the title right here in Austin. That's a tall order but it's on. Antonelli's trying to keep his head straight though, saying he'll have more fun if he just forgets about the championship pressure and focuses on his driving.

There's some drama brewing with grid penalties too. Gabriel Bortoleto at Audi, Franco Colapinto at Alpine, and Arvid Lindblad at Racing Bulls have all copped penalties for engine changes, with Bortoleto dropping 20 places. Pierre Gasly is flying for Alpine though, currently topping the timesheets. Williams' Carlos Sainz admitted his car's a total mess and they're not expecting miracles this weekend. It's shaping up to be a proper chaotic one at COTA.

The real question everyone's asking is who's actually quickest on race pace. Andrew Benson reckons it's genuinely tight between Verstappen and Red Bull versus the rest, even with Leclerc's one-lap pace advantage. Qualifying will give everyone a clearer picture, but prediction time at this track is basically guessing. One thing's for certain, Austin's delivering the drama.
