Lewis Hamilton finally got what he came to Ferrari for this season, but it's starting to feel like the dream might slip away. The 41-year-old secured his first podium in Ferrari red at the Chinese Grand Prix back in his 26th start for the team, then bagged his maiden victory in Barcelona in mid-June. Everyone thought that'd be the launchpad for a proper title charge. Instead, he's heading into the summer break 50 points adrift of shock leader Kimi Antonelli, and it's partly his own doing.

The penalties have been relentless lately. Lewis jumped the start at Silverstone, then picked up a dubious five-second penalty at Spa-Francorchamps for his first-lap contact with George Russell that probably could've gone either way. In Hungary, it got worse with two separate penalties, one for impeding a driver in qualifying and another for pit lane speeding. Teammate Charles Leclerc has shown what's possible by winning at Silverstone and finishing second in Belgium, which makes Hamilton's run even more frustrating. Ferrari's execution hasn't always been brilliant either, but Lewis has admitted he needs to stop giving the stewards excuses to reach for the penalty flag.

The truly insane story of the 2026 season halfway point is how phenomenal young Antonelli has been. This was supposed to be George Russell's year with Mercedes expected to dominate early on, and while Russell's been dealt terrible luck, his junior partner has barely put a foot wrong. The teenager's got six wins already with only two technical failures preventing what would be an almost perfect podium record. He'll turn 20 later this month, and there's genuine talk he could smash Sebastian Vettel's record as the sport's youngest champion at just 23.

Don't count Hamilton out just yet though. Being two full race wins behind with 12 rounds still to go isn't insurmountable, but it leaves almost no margin for error if this is to be his Ferrari fairytale. The championship's still wide open with Charles Leclerc, Russell, Lando Norris, and remarkably even Max Verstappen still very much in it despite being winless so far. What's clear is that Antonelli's proven he's the real deal and won't crumble under pressure.
