Hamilton Edges Out Frustrated Verstappen in Austin FP3 as Ferrari Stays Sharp

Lewis Hamilton grabbed the top spot in final practice at the United States Grand Prix, clocking a 1:34.893 to head into qualifying as the man to beat. The Ferrari driver looked sharp around the Circuit of the Americas, though his session wasn't without drama. Hamilton got held up by Audi's Gabriel Bortoleto crawling on the racing line late on, which nearly cost him a better lap. Still, his time was enough to edge out Charles Leclerc, who was just 0.083 seconds behind until he too fell foul of the track limits at Turn 10 after losing the rear of his Ferrari.

Max Verstappen's day was far from perfect, and the Red Bull star wasn't shy about showing his frustration over the radio. The Dutchman complained about gear shift issues, telling his team it was stupid and dumb, which clearly had him wound up during FP3. He still managed to get some decent work done but was well off the pace compared to the Ferrari cars and Mercedes' Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who's hunting his maiden world championship this weekend. Verstappen's late push on soft tyres ended with a massive lock-up into Turn 15 that had him burning rubber as he tried to salvage the run.

Antonelli proved Mercedes hasn't given up the fight, nearly sneaking into the top spot before he also fell victim to track limits violations at Turn 9. The Italian driver did manage to jump his teammate George Russell into P4 with a late assault, though he still trailed Hamilton by 0.303 seconds. Russell struggled to find consistency around COTA and had his own frustrations, getting caught up in traffic and finding himself alongside Haas' Esteban Ocon and Nico Hulkenberg in some unnecessarily tight moments. McLaren's Lando Norris briefly threatened to top the board with a 1:30.066 but lost that lap time for exceeding track limits, a persistent theme throughout the morning session on Saturday.
