Haas Lock In Ferrari Protege Rafael Camara for 2027 Grid Slot

Right, so Haas has officially confirmed what we've been expecting. They're bringing in Rafael Camara, Ferrari's talented protege, to drive for them starting in 2027. The 21-year-old Brazilian gets the nod to partner Oliver Bearman, meaning Haas will field an all-Ferrari academy junior line-up next season. It's a proper shake-up for the American squad as Esteban Ocon departs after two years with the team.

Camara's been putting in serious work to earn this shot. He's currently battling it out in FIA F2 and leading the championship standings by seven points over Red Bull junior Nikola Tsolov. Before that, he claimed the 2025 F3 title and won the 2024 FRECA championship, showing he's got the goods to hang with the best junior talent around. The lad also got valuable seat time in Haas machinery during testing, which clearly helped his case.

The decision came down to some stiff competition. Jack Doohan, Haas's own third driver, was apparently pushing hard for the seat alongside some other serious contenders like 2025 F2 champion Leonardo Fornaroli from McLaren and Ryo Hirakawa, the Toyota-backed Le Mans winner. But team principal Ayao Komatsu and owner Gene Haas eventually went with Camara, who's bringing some handy sponsorship backing from Brazil and Ferrari's driver academy behind him.

Camara expressed his gratitude in the usual fashion, thanking Haas leadership and the Ferrari Driver Academy for their support. He's already talking about the learning curve ahead and getting to grips with the car. What's really cool is that his arrival means Brazil will have two full-time drivers on the grid for the first time since 2016, joining fellow Brazilian Gabriel Bortoleto at Audi. That's the kind of milestone that shows just how far the kid's come.
