Pierre Gasly has done it. The Alpine driver grabbed his maiden Formula 1 pole position at Monza with a brilliant last-lap effort in qualifying, stealing the show when nobody saw it coming. It's a massive moment for Gasly and a real statement that Alpine are cooking up something special this season. George Russell in the Mercedes was hunting for that top spot but came up just short, finishing second. Oscar Piastri rounded out the top three for McLaren, meaning the Scuderia pair of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton will line up fourth and fifth.

The grid behind them tells an interesting story. Max Verstappen qualified sixth in the Oracle Red Bull, while Kimi Antonelli put in a solid Q3 lap to grab seventh quickest. However, Antonelli won't see that grid spot because he's taking an engine penalty and dropping to the back. Same goes for Liam Lawson and Alex Albon, who also cop grid penalties. That reshuffles things nicely for Franco Colapinto, who moves up to seventh on the grid. Lando Norris, Arvid Lindblad, and Gabriel Bortoleto fill out the top ten.

Russell was clearly pushing hard to close down his points gap on teammate Antonelli this weekend, but Gasly simply had the pace when it mattered most. The French driver's final Q3 push proved the difference, delivering that shock pole that'll have the Alpine garage absolutely buzzing. Meanwhile, Leclerc and Hamilton will be eyeing a strong start for Ferrari, with Verstappen in the mix just behind. The stage is set for a brilliant Italian Grand Prix, and Gasly's got pole to show for his efforts.
