Pierre Gasly has absolutely nailed it at Monza, claiming pole position for Alpine in a stunning qualifying performance that'll have the Tifosi's heads spinning. The Frenchman will lead the field away on Sunday, with George Russell's Mercedes lining up alongside him on the front row. It's not your typical Ferrari lockout on home soil, and that's down to some proper qualifying drama behind the scenes.

Oscar Piastri had the pace to challenge for the front, qualifying third fastest, but he's been hit with a three-position grid penalty for impeding Liam Lawson during Q2. That means Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton move up to third and fourth respectively. Hamilton's joining Ferrari this season, so it's a decent result from what was a disappointing qualifying for the Scuderia as a whole, given it's their home race.

The penalties don't stop with Piastri though. Liam Lawson takes a trip to the back of the grid after exceeding his permitted power unit allocation for the season. He's joined down there by championship leader Kimi Antonelli and Alex Albon, both nursing engine-related penalties as well. That's a proper shake-up of the strategy heading into race day, especially with Russell sitting 59 points behind Antonelli in the title fight.

Max Verstappen lines up fifth in his Red Bull, with Piastri dropping to sixth despite that penalty. Franco Colapinto and Lando Norris occupy seventh and eighth, while Arvid Lindblad and Gabriel Bortoleto round out the top 10. Russell's definitely got a golden opportunity here to gain ground on his direct rival, with Lawson and Antonelli starting from deep in the pack.
