Ferrari Needs to Back Hamilton Over Leclerc to Win the Title, Says Smedley

The debate over Ferrari's team orders just got heated again. After Lewis Hamilton's frustrated radio messages at Zandvoort where he asked the team to tell Charles Leclerc to move over while running a different strategy, former Ferrari engineer Rob Smedley has come out swinging with some tough love for the Scuderia. If Ferrari actually wants to fight for the championship this year, Smedley reckons they need to prioritize Hamilton over Leclerc, and they need to do it consistently.

Speaking on the High Performance Racing Podcast, Smedley didn't mince words. He acknowledged how difficult this would be for Charles and everyone in his garage, but pointed out a simple fact: they all work for Ferrari. The team's job is to maximize championship points, and right now Hamilton's delivering the better results. Smedley argued that when Ferrari's got the fastest car, they should make sure Lewis takes the win. When they don't, they should focus on getting him as many points as possible.

The numbers back up the argument too. Hamilton is currently tied on points with George Russell in the drivers' standings, though he's sitting 59 points back of Kimi Antonelli. That's a gap that won't close itself, and it won't close without a fully committed, unified team effort. Smedley reckons Ferrari's inconsistent car performance means they can't afford to waste points through internal politics. Every position matters if they want to steal points from Mercedes and make a real dent in this championship fight.

She didn't specify what happened over the past month, but wrote about the lessons motherhood has taught her, addressing Penelope directly with a heartfelt message about supporting her and protecting her gentle spirit. Max Verstappen was quick to show his support for the post, adding his voice to the chorus of encouragement.

The contrast between the two stories shows what Formula 1 is really about. Yes, there's cutthroat competition and tough decisions about team strategy. But there's also real life, real families, and real moments that matter far more than any race result. That's the human side of F1 that doesn't always make the headlines but keeps everyone connected to why they love this sport in the first place.
