Fernando Alonso has just signed a new deal with Aston Martin that makes him the highest-paid Spanish athlete in the world. The two-time world champion will stay at the Silverstone-based team alongside Lance Stroll for the 2027 season, and the numbers behind his contract are seriously impressive. While Aston Martin kept things quiet officially, Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo has reported that Alonso's base salary is expected to exceed 40 million dollars, which puts him firmly in the top three earners on the entire grid.

So how does that stack up against the competition? Well, Alonso now sits behind only Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen when it comes to annual wages. Hamilton, who switched to Ferrari, is pulling in around 70.5 million dollars a year, while Verstappen's Red Bull mega-deal is worth a reported 100 million annually. The 45-year-old Spaniard will now out-earn some seriously talented drivers like reigning world champion Lando Norris, Charles Leclerc, and Carlos Sainz, all of whom signed new contracts during the 2026 season.

What's wild is that this is the biggest payday of Alonso's entire three-decade F1 career. Even during his second stint at McLaren, which wasn't great if we're being honest, he was making around 35 million a year. The fact that Aston Martin is investing this kind of money in him at this stage of his career shows real confidence from team owner Lawrence Stroll and the team's leadership. They believe Fernando is the guy who can drag them up the grid and turn things around after the AMR26 development disaster.

At 45 years old, nobody really knows how much longer Alonso plans to stick around in Formula 1. He's been chasing that elusive third world championship for two decades now, and time's ticking. But with this new contract locked in and reportedly the most lucrative of his career, he's clearly not ready to hang up his helmet just yet. The question now is whether he can deliver something special for Aston Martin before he eventually decides to call it a day.
