The 1989 Japanese Grand Prix aftermath was absolutely mental. Ayrton Senna got disqualified after his title-decider with Alain Prost, handing the championship to Prost instead. The FIA slapped Senna with a 100,000 dollar fine and a suspended six-month ban. Senna reckoned the FIA president Jean-Marie Balestre was rigging things to favour Prost and accused the federation of corruption. He refused to apologize or pay up, threatening to retire completely. Only a last-minute compromise got him back on the grid for 1990, and then Senna got his revenge by crashing into Prost at Suzuka to win the championship himself.

Fast forward to 2005 at Indianapolis, and we got chaos of a different kind. Michelin-supplied teams were getting devastating tyre failures at Turn 13, and the French manufacturer begged the FIA to add a chicane to slow cars down. FIA boss Max Mosley refused, worried about sporting fairness. When Ferrari also vetoed a non-championship race idea, all 14 Michelin cars pitted out before the race even started, leaving just six Bridgestone cars to finish. The fans were absolutely fuming and pelted the track with rubbish. Michael Schumacher cruised to an empty victory, and the whole thing basically killed F1 in North America for good.

Then came 2021 Abu Dhabi, the scandal that's still got everyone arguing today. Lewis Hamilton was cruising to his eighth world title against Max Verstappen until a late safety car changed everything. Race director Michael Masi made a bonkers decision to unlap only five cars and restart for one final lap, giving Verstappen fresh tyres while Hamilton was stuck on old ones. Verstappen took the title in that single lap, and absolutely everyone lost it. Fans went ballistic, teams questioned sporting integrity, and the FIA had to launch a full investigation that ended with Masi getting removed from his job.
