Kimi Antonelli is on the brink of securing his first world championship at the Mexico City Grand Prix, and he's in a really strong position to get it done today. After qualifying fifth, the Italian gained a spot on the grid thanks to Max Verstappen's one-place penalty for his clash with Liam Lawson on Friday. Now Antonelli just needs to finish ninth or higher to mathematically seal the title and become the youngest champion in Formula 1 history. It's genuinely within touching distance.

Here's the thing though, Ferrari might throw a spanner in the works for Mercedes' plans. Lewis Hamilton and George Russell both start on the front row for the Scuderia and Mercedes respectively, which should be perfect for a double celebration. But Charles Leclerc slots in third on the grid, and that's enough to potentially derail Mercedes from clinching the constructors' championship this weekend.

For Mercedes to wrap up both titles in Mexico, they'd need to outscore Ferrari by a massive 39 points across the race. That means if Hamilton and Russell finish one-two, Ferrari can only score four points maximum. If one Mercedes driver wins and the other grabs third, Ferrari would be limited to just a single point. Realistically though, with Leclerc starting third, the odds of Ferrari being that quiet are slim to none.

If Antonelli hits any trouble and fails to score, his coronation gets pushed back to Sao Paulo anyway. A mechanical failure or a first-lap incident would deny him the points he needs, and if either Hamilton or Russell wins while Antonelli doesn't score, the math doesn't work for the championship to be decided today. So while everything's lining up nicely, there's still enough uncertainty to keep things interesting heading into the race.
