Hamilton Grabs Historic First Ferrari Pole at Mexico City

Lewis Hamilton has done it. In a stunning qualifying display at the Mexico Grand Prix, the British driver claimed pole position for the first time as a Ferrari driver, ending a three-year drought since his last pole back in Hungary 2023. This one's special though, because it came with the Scuderia, and Hamilton delivered when it counted most in the final Q3 shootout.

George Russell will line up alongside his former Mercedes teammate on the front row, just 0.009 seconds adrift. The Mercedes driver put in a solid performance to secure second place, though Charles Leclerc was the one who'd looked ominously quick all weekend. The Monegasque topped both Friday practice sessions but has to settle for third on the grid after a slightly off qualifying performance. Max Verstappen qualified fourth, though he'll drop to fifth on the grid thanks to a one-place penalty he's carrying into Sunday's race.

Championship leader Kimi Antonelli rounded out the top five, though he was nearly two tenths down on Hamilton's pace when the session wrapped. Lando Norris had been flying through the earlier qualifying stages but a costly lock-up in Q3 torpedoed his chances at fighting for the front row, leaving him to settle for sixth place. Red Bull's Isack Hadjar managed seventh, while Liam Lawson qualified eighth but will start ninth due to his own grid penalty.

The rest of the top ten saw Arvid Lindblad ninth on the grid before his penalty moves him to eighth, and Pierre Gasly rounding things out in tenth. What makes Hamilton's pole particularly impressive is the way it silenced the talk about Ferrari's weekend. Yes, Leclerc looked rapid in practice, but when qualifying mattered, the 39-year-old veteran showed exactly why he's still got it at the highest level.
