Antonelli Won't Slam the Door on Ferrari After Monza Magic as Wolff Fires Back

Kimi Antonelli has become the toast of Italy after his stunning victory at Monza, and while the Tifosi have embraced him as their new hero, there's growing speculation about whether he might one day wear red. The Mercedes driver won't completely rule out a future switch to Ferrari, though he's made it clear his focus right now is on delivering championships with the team that's backed him since he was a kid.

When asked about a potential move to the Scuderia, Antonelli kept things diplomatic. He acknowledged the incredible support from the fans at Monza and the emotional high of becoming the first Italian to win the Italian Grand Prix in 66 years. But he emphasized his loyalty to Mercedes, which took him into their junior programme at age 11 and backed him straight onto the F1 grid in 2025. "I feel I owe them a debt for all the opportunities they have given me," he said. "The goal is to win as much as possible with Mercedes. Then we will see. I don't rule anything out."

That measured response hasn't gone down well with his team principal Toto Wolff, who's fired a pointed warning at Ferrari. Wolff reckons the Italian team should've made their move years ago if they wanted Antonelli, rather than circling now that he's turned into a championship contender at Mercedes. "Kimi has been a Mercedes driver since he was 11," Wolff told Belgian media. "Ferrari should have done the job six or seven years ago, instead of realizing now that they have a good Italian driver."

The subtext is pretty clear: Wolff isn't happy about Ferrari sniffing around his star driver just as Antonelli is repaying Mercedes' faith in him with genuine success on track. After a mixed debut season in 2025, Antonelli's 2026 campaign has been nothing short of sensational, and Wolff clearly wants to keep him focused on bringing glory to the Silver Arrows rather than daydreaming about the red cars. Whether Antonelli's measured "never say never" approach will eventually tempt him to Maranello remains to be seen, but for now, Wolff's got his hands on the wheel.
