Antonelli Takes US GP Pole with Championship Glory Within Reach

Kimi Antonelli has secured pole position at the United States Grand Prix, and it could be the prelude to something even bigger. The Mercedes driver knocked out his seventh pole of 2026 by edging Max Verstappen by just 0.179 seconds in a thrilling qualifying session at the Circuit of the Americas. But pole position isn't really what's got everyone talking this weekend. The 20-year-old Italian is just one race away from becoming the youngest Formula 1 world champion ever.

For Antonelli to seal the deal on Sunday, he needs to convert pole into a win while his team-mate George Russell finishes ninth or lower and Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton ends up fifth. That's not a given against a charging Verstappen, but the runaway championship leader certainly made his intentions clear in qualifying. After taking the top spot, Antonelli stayed focused on the job at hand, saying he'll be gunning for a strong start and looking to control the pace from Turn 1, though he acknowledged the battle won't be straightforward with the wind creating unpredictable conditions throughout Q3.

What shocked everyone was Ferrari's complete disappearance when it mattered most. The Scuderia had topped all three practice sessions and looked like the team to beat, but come qualifying, Charles Leclerc and Hamilton found themselves over two tenths adrift. They qualified fourth and fifth respectively, leaving the Italian squad wondering where their pace evaporated to. Meanwhile, Russell could only manage sixth for Mercedes, with McLaren's Oscar Piastri seventh and Liam Norris eighth after getting a lap deleted for exceeding track limits.

The day's other main talking point was the absolute battering Gabriel Bortoledo's Audi took on the grid. The Colombian qualifier 12th but will start dead last thanks to a staggering 60-place penalty for engine component changes. Franco Colapinto faces a 10-place drop as well, moving him back to 21st. With so much drama already playing out off-track, Sunday's 56-lap race promises to be absolutely electric, especially with a world title potentially on the line.
