Andrea Kimi Antonelli has claimed his first pole position of the 2026 season at the United States Grand Prix, setting a stunning 1:34.035 at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas. The Mercedes driver edged out Max Verstappen of Red Bull by 0.179 seconds in a thrilling Q3 battle, with the Italian proving he's got what it takes to mix it at the sharp end when the pressure's on. This is Antonelli's first pole in nine rounds, and it comes at a crucial moment in his bid for the championship.

Going into qualifying, Ferrari looked like the team to beat after Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton dominated all three practice sessions at COTA. The Scuderia pair set the pace consistently on Friday and Saturday morning, but when it really mattered in Q3, it was Antonelli who delivered the goods. George Russell was quick early on with a 1:34.476, but his Mercedes teammate quickly surpassed him and then managed to hold on against a fierce assault from Verstappen and the rest of the grid.
Several drivers headed into qualifying with their hands tied behind their backs due to grid penalties. Audi's Gabriel Bortoleto took a massive 20-place drop and was sacrificed by the team to help teammates, while Franco Colapinto of Alpine got a 10-place penalty and bowed out in Q2. Only Racing Bulls' Arvid Lindblad managed to make it through to the final stage despite carrying a five-place grid penalty.

The drama continued right up until the final laps. Lando Norris looked set to challenge Antonelli's pole time but exceeded track limits at Turn 19 and lost his effort, dropping down to eighth place. Red Bull's Isack Hadjar completed the top three with Leclerc slotting into fourth as pole eluded the Ferrari drivers despite their strong practice showing. McLaren's Oscar Piastri rounded out the Q3 top six, while Norris's penalty cost the team a strong qualifying result.
