Antonelli's Stunning Austin Comeback Masks Russell's Frustrating Day for Mercedes

Kimi Antonelli delivered an absolute masterclass at the Circuit of The Americas to grab a commanding victory and extend his championship lead heading into Mexico City. After a tough Friday that left Mercedes questioning their race pace, Antonelli bounced back spectacularly from pole position, nailing the start on medium tyres and building a comfortable advantage over Max Verstappen. The Italian driver stuck with a one-stop strategy while rivals gambled on two stops, and when he finally pitted for hard tyres, he had the gap managed perfectly to cruise home to victory and make the title his to lose in the final rounds.

It was a completely different story for George Russell, who endured a miserable afternoon at COTA. The British driver copped a five-second penalty on the opening lap for running wide and gaining an advantage in his battle with Oscar Piastri, a decision that immediately put him on the back foot. Russell struggled to find the pace throughout the afternoon, never managing to get close enough to make a genuine assault on the McLaren ahead of him, ultimately finishing eighth and admitting the car just didn't have what it needed on the day.

Toto Wolff and the Mercedes team were understandably buzzing about the turnaround from Friday to Sunday. The team boss praised Antonelli's exceptional drive and highlighted how the squad never gave up despite looking nowhere near competitive during practice. Andrew Shovlin, the trackside engineering director, called it a remarkable recovery, noting that the strategy calls weren't straightforward but Mercedes made the right decisions under pressure, including the call to stick with the one-stop for Antonelli when others were bailing for two stops.

For Russell, the team acknowledged the day simply didn't go his way. The time penalty hurt, sure, but Shovlin pointed out that even once Russell found his rhythm in the second stint, he got bottled up behind Piastri with no way through. Mercedes identified that the car's setup window has become trickier since their latest update, something they'll need to sort before Mexico rolls around. Russell himself vowed to work with the team to understand what went wrong and come back stronger for the final push toward the title.
