Antonelli's Dominance: Mercedes Youngster Leads 2026 Championship After 12 Rounds

The 2026 Formula 1 season has thrown everything up in the air, and it's Kimi Antonelli leading the charge. The Mercedes driver sits atop the championship on 242 points after 12 of 23 rounds, absolutely commanding the first half of the season with five wins in the opening six races. At just 22, Antonelli's become the youngest driver ever to lead the standings, and honestly, he's made it look easy. The new rulebook with its beefier power units, active aerodynamics, and reworked chassis has completely reshuffled the grid that teams had spent years perfecting, and Mercedes have nailed the setup.

It's been a different story for some of the usual suspects. George Russell sits second on 183 points, tied with Lewis Hamilton but ahead on countback. Hamilton's had an incredible turnaround at Ferrari, grabbing his first win in the red car at the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona and his first F1 victory in 686 days. That was his 106th career win. Charles Leclerc rounds out Ferrari's pairing in fifth on 155 points after winning at Silverstone. Mercedes lead the constructors' championship on 425 points, a commanding 87-point advantage over Ferrari.

McLaren, last year's constructors' champions, didn't get their first win until round 11, which has been a rough ride. Lando Norris has finally found his groove though, taking victories at Hungary and Zandvoort to sit fourth on 159 points. It's been brutal for his teammate Oscar Piastri though. The Melbourne driver came into 2026 as defending runner-up but crashed during qualifying at his home race and got sidelined by a power unit failure in China. He's got just two podiums and no wins, sitting seventh, 55 points behind Norris in the same machinery.

Max Verstappen has endured a nightmare campaign by his standards. The Red Bull driver hasn't won a race yet and crashed out on the opening lap at his home race in Zandvoort, currently sitting sixth on 112 points. With 11 rounds left to play, there's still everything to fight for, but Antonelli and Mercedes have built a seriously commanding position. The youngster's performance has been a real statement of intent, and if he keeps this up, we could be looking at one of the most dominant seasons in years.
