Antonelli Extends Championship Lead to 84 Points After Malaysian GP Victory

Kimi Antonelli has taken a massive step towards the 2026 title by extending his lead over Mercedes teammate George Russell to 84 points following the Malaysian Grand Prix at Sepang. Antonelli finished second in the race, but Russell's retirement with engine failure just meters from the finish line proved absolutely devastating for his championship hopes. What could've been a crucial podium for Russell turned into a complete nightmare, and with nearly half the season to play, the British driver is essentially out of contention.

The big winner on the day was Max Verstappen, who took the checkered flag and moved level on points with Lando Norris in the battle for second place in the championship. Both drivers are sitting on 188 points, but they're three points behind Charles Leclerc in fourth. Lewis Hamilton grabbed second place at Sepang and is now 24 points behind Russell, meaning the Ferrari driver is very much still in the hunt for a top-three finish in the standings.

Down the grid, there's movement in the fight for the midfield championship positions. Racing Bulls has pulled clear in the battle for fifth place in the constructors' standings, thanks to solid performances from Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad. They now hold a 22-point advantage over Alpine, whose drivers Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto failed to score in Malaysia. The championship is tightening up in places, with Aston Martin just five points behind Williams after Fernando Alonso picked up eighth place.

Mercedes leads the constructors' championship with 556 points, but Ferrari is hunting them down with 405 points. McLaren sits third with 316 points, while Red Bull has 298. It's still very much a three-team battle at the front, but the Malaysian GP has reshaped the picture in ways nobody expected, with Russell's DNF potentially proving the turning point in this wild 2026 season.
