Verstappen Finally Breaks Pole Curse at Sepang as Hamilton Hunts His First Win of 2026

Max Verstappen has snapped his pole position drought in style at the Bahrain Grand Prix hosted in Malaysia, securing his maiden pole of the 2026 season at the sweltering Sepang circuit. The Red Bull Racing driver clocked a 1:35.130 to edge out Lewis Hamilton of Ferrari, who lines up second just three tenths adrift. It's a massive breakthrough for Verstappen after months of chasing pole without success, and he'll be targeting his first victory of the campaign come race day.

Hamilton's strong showing in qualifying represents a real opportunity for the seven-time champion to finally get his 2026 campaign rolling. The Ferrari ace spoke about the incredible challenge posed by the Malaysian heat, with track temperatures reaching 58 degrees Celsius. He revealed that Ferrari made crucial setup changes throughout the weekend to find the sweet spot, and his last-minute adjustments clearly paid dividends when it mattered most. Hamilton's gratitude to his team was genuine as he reflected on closing down Verstappen's advantage.

Isack Hadjar secured third fastest for Red Bull Racing, sitting four tenths behind his teammate, though he'll drop five grid positions due to an engine penalty and start from eighth. Kimi Antonelli's Mercedes had a frustrating session after a track limits infringement in Q2 forced him to burn through extra soft tyres, leaving him with nothing left in the tank for a proper Q3 assault. The Italian managed fourth but will inherit third on the grid once Hadjar's penalty is applied.

The rest of the field saw Charles Leclerc take fifth for Ferrari, while Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri lined up sixth and seventh for McLaren. George Russell had an anonymous day for Mercedes, finishing eighth and over seven tenths off the pace, continuing a trend of struggles since the team's mixed weekend with their major upgrade package. Pierre Gasly and Gabriel Bortoleto completed the top ten.

Verstappen admitted it felt fantastic to finally secure pole after months of effort, calling it incredible given where Red Bull started the season. He's now confident about his chances for race day with that all-important starting position locked down. Meanwhile, Hadjar remained upbeat despite the penalty, expressing confidence he can work through the field from eighth and still deliver a strong result given Red Bull's current pace advantage at this venue.
