The British driver was nearly a full second quicker than second place in Q3, which is just mental at a circuit like Baku. Charles Leclerc will start alongside him on the front row for Ferrari, but honestly, Russell's performance was in a completely different league out there.

The really spicy bit is what's happening further down the grid. Oscar Piastri lines up third for McLaren with Red Bull's Isack Hadjar right behind him in fourth, having out-qualified Max Verstappen by over half a second. Hadjar's comeback drive is impressive, but Verstappen finishing eighth is going to sting for the Dutchman. Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton round out the next two spots, while Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto hold seventh and ninth respectively, sandwiching Verstappen in between.

The penalty chaos has shuffled things around nicely though. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli had a nightmare, crashing into the barriers at Turn 1 during Q1 and dropping all the way to 16th. Then there's Carlos Sainz in the Williams, who'd qualified well enough for the top 10 but picked up a five-place penalty for ignoring yellow flags, sending him down to 14th. Sergio Perez rounds out the field at the back in 20th, though technically he's got a three-place penalty hanging over him for impeding Piastri.

Aston Martin's got the worst of it penalty-wise, with both Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll getting multiple grid drops for power unit changes, pushing them right to the back. When you add it all together, you've got a grid that looks pretty wild on paper. Russell's pole is massive for Mercedes, but there's potential for chaos on that run to Turn 1 with Piastri and Hadjar lurking, and you've got to wonder how Antonelli's going to fight back from 16th with his championship lead under threat.
