Now, heading back to Azerbaijan, Piastri's hoping history repeats itself, but the good kind this time.

What makes Baku so brutal is its unpredictability. One weekend you're riding high, the next you're punishing a wall. Piastri described it perfectly: "It's a love-hate relationship with this circuit." He knows what's needed to succeed here too. "There's always plenty going on," he explained. "It's all about confidence; you have to push right to the limit. It's an unusual combination to have a street circuit with such massive braking zones. It's exciting." The key is finding that razor's edge between pushing hard and avoiding disaster.

Beyond Baku's unique demands, Piastri's still getting his head around the 2026 car. Progress has been gradual and messy, which is frustrating when you're fighting for positions. "A little, yes," he admitted when asked if he's improving with the machine. "Progress isn't linear. You always find a few things that work and some that don't." At the last race, the car showed speed but extracting consistent lap time proved difficult. His teammate Lando Norris grabbed pole position there, which shows the potential in the package when everything clicks.

What's different this season is that old tricks aren't working anymore. The cars have changed dramatically compared to previous years, and Piastri's had to rethink his approach. "A lot of things that worked for me in the past don't work anymore," he said. "So it's about finding different solutions." Team principal Andrea Stella suggested Piastri might be overthinking things, but the driver's response shows he understands what's needed: a focused plan rather than random experimenting. "The team's response has been very good when it comes to improving things as quickly as possible," he said.

McLaren's backing him fully as they figure this out together. Piastri stressed that with limited time in a weekend, you need strategy and coordination. "We're definitely not standing still," he insisted. "And there isn't one simple solution." If he can combine the planning discipline his team's helping develop with the raw speed he knows he has, Baku could finally be the circuit where he turns that love-hate relationship into pure joy.
