Norris Edges Antonelli for FP3 Win as Haas Shocks Paddock by Benching Ocon

Lando Norris took the spoils in Mexico City GP FP3 on Saturday, pipping Mercedes driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli by just 0.001 seconds in an absolutely razor-tight session. The McLaren driver's late qualifying simulation effort on the soft tyres proved just enough to steal top spot, but honestly it was so close between those two that either could've easily claimed it. The real talking point though wasn't the lap times, it was what happened in the Haas garage, where the team made the shock call to bench Esteban Ocon for the rest of the weekend.

Haas left the F1 paddock scratching their heads when they announced that Ocon wouldn't continue at the Mexico City event. The team offered no explanation for the mid-weekend decision, but there was tension brewing, with the French driver having an edgy exchange with his race engineer over the team's run plan. Reserve driver Ryo Hirakawa, who'd already driven FP1, stepped in to replace Ocon for the remainder of the weekend. The 32-year-old Japanese driver will make his F1 debut in qualifying, giving him just FP3 to get comfortable in the VF-26.

The session itself was a bit of a grind for several drivers. Gabriel Bortoleto spent another chunk of time stuck in the garage with engine troubles in his Audi, while Fernando Alonso reported power issues to Aston Martin. Red Bull's Isack Hadjar was absolutely fuming after 30 minutes, calling his car 'the worst I've driven so far this weekend.' Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton showed Ferrari's continuing strength at altitude, with Leclerc hitting a 1:18.152 on mediums before the soft-tyre dash began.

The late-session action ramped up as teams switched to qualifying sims on the soft Pirellis. George Russell banked a 1:18.107 early on but made a tactical call that backfired slightly, wasting time with an extra warm-up lap. Antonelli would've benefited from the same approach Russell discovered, but the Mercedes driver's flying lap still got him within a whisker of Norris at the death. It's all incredibly tight heading into qualifying, and that paper-thin margin between first and second tells you everything about how competitive things are shaping up here in Mexico.
