Mexico City Predictions: Can Antonelli Seal the Title, or Will Leclerc and Verstappen Spoil the Party?

Mexico City Predictions: Can Antonelli Seal the Title, or Will Leclerc and Verstappen Spoil the Party?

Andrea Kimi Antonelli rocks up to Mexico City with one hand already on the F1 trophy. The Mercedes star needs just a ninth-place finish to mathematically wrap up the championship this weekend, and honestly, that's got to feel surreal for the 20-year-old Bologna lad. After winning nine races so far, including his dominant display at COTA last time out, Antonelli's sitting just two points clear of the field with five rounds remaining. If he can pull this off, he'll become only the third Italian ever to win the championship, following in the footsteps of legends like Alberto Ascari.

But here's where it gets spicy. The F1 Oversteer team reckon the race win itself could go anywhere, and that's where things get interesting for everyone else still mathematically alive. George Russell needs to win and pray his teammate finishes tenth or worse to keep his own title hopes alive going into Brazil. Lewis Hamilton's in a similar boat with Ferrari, needing victory and an Antonelli points-zero to stay in the fight. Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen aren't out of it either, so Mexico City's shaping up to be a proper battle even with Antonelli's massive advantage.

When it comes to pole position, the experts are split. Kyle Archer and Tyler Rowlinson both reckon Antonelli will take it, with Archer pointing out he's grabbed pole at almost every race since securing his first in China back in March. David Comerford's the contrarian though, backing Charles Leclerc to nick it. He reckons Ferrari's strong cornering and the low-grip nature of the Mexican circuit could play into their hands, especially if the SF-26's straight-line weaknesses get masked by the high-downforce setup required at altitude.

For the race itself, Archer predicts an Antonelli, Leclerc, Hamilton podium with Antonelli delivering the goods. Comerford's got Leclerc winning with Verstappen and Hamilton following, while Rowlinson backs Antonelli to stay ahead with Hamilton and Leclerc rounding out the podium. The consensus seems to be that whether Antonelli wins big or just ticks the box, he's got this wrapped up. Mexico City either becomes his coronation or just another stepping stone to history.

The real storyline this weekend isn't just whether Antonelli clinches, it's who actually gets to beat him on track. That bragging rights battle between Ferrari, Red Bull, and the rest of the field could turn out to be the race's most compelling subplot.
