Mercedes Brings Upgraded Package to Austin as Antonelli Eyes Championship Clincher

Mercedes is bringing both cars fully equipped with their latest front wing package to the United States Grand Prix this weekend, and it couldn't come at a better time for Kimi Antonelli. The updated specification will debut on both Antonelli's and George Russell's cars at Circuit of the Americas after Mercedes only had a single example ready during the Singapore sprint event last week.

Back in Singapore, Mercedes made the strategic decision to test the new front wing with Antonelli during the opening practice session, gathering crucial data despite the sprint format giving them just 60 minutes of track time. It was a calculated risk, as Deputy Team Principal Bradley Lord explained. With only one part available and the compressed schedule, they couldn't afford to risk damaging it and facing pit lane starts, so they focused purely on learning. That FP1 run ended up paying serious dividends for the team's development programme.
Simone Resta, Mercedes Deputy Technical Director, outlined how the team treated Singapore as an investment in future performance. They changed multiple variables during that limited practice window, swapping tyres, testing the new front wing, and gathering all the data they needed to refine their approach. Now armed with those findings, Mercedes headed home to simulate, analyse, and prepare for Austin with both drivers running the improved kit.

The timing is perfect because Antonelli currently sits 102 points clear of his teammate Russell in the championship standings. The Mercedes driver needs to extend that gap to 125 points this weekend to secure the 2026 drivers' title at COTA. With both cars now sporting the same upgraded front wing, Antonelli will have maximum support from the team as he looks to potentially wrap things up on American soil.

Lord expressed confidence that bringing the full updated package to Austin puts Mercedes in a stronger position than they've managed so far this season. Running both cars in identical configuration should help them extract maximum performance from the new front wing without the complications they faced in Singapore. For Antonelli, it's another piece of the puzzle falling into place as he chases his first championship.
