Ferrari's Race Pace Masterclass at Austin: Leclerc and Hamilton Dominate Average Lap Times Despite Antonelli's Win

Ferrari absolutely dominated the race pace numbers at the 2026 United States Grand Prix in Austin, even though Andrea Kimi Antonelli took the victory for Mercedes. Charles Leclerc clocked the fastest average lap time of the entire field at 1:40.090, with teammate Lewis Hamilton right on his heels at 1:40.193, just 0.103 seconds per lap behind. Max Verstappen's Red Bull ended up third at 1:40.229, meaning the Ferrari drivers were comfortably quicker than the competition when you average out their pace across the whole race.

The thing is, having the two quickest average lap times didn't translate to a Ferrari one-two finish because Antonelli's strategy was simply brilliant. The Mercedes driver ran a one-stop race using medium and hard tyres while both Ferrari drivers did two stops on soft, medium and hard compounds. Even though Antonelli's average pace of 1:40.375 was nearly three tenths slower than Leclerc's, his strategy saved him about 20 seconds in pit stop time, more than compensating for roughly 16 seconds of accumulated lap deficit. It's a perfect example of why strategy matters just as much as pure speed in Formula 1.

For Lewis Hamilton, the numbers are actually pretty encouraging despite him finishing fourth. He was struggling with the balance of the car throughout the weekend, yet he still managed to stay incredibly close to Charles Leclerc in average race pace. That marginal 0.103-second gap shows how competitive he was being, even when the SF-26 wasn't playing ball with him setup-wise. Meanwhile, George Russell had a shocker by Mercedes standards, averaging 1:41.209 and finishing 0.834 seconds per lap slower than Antonelli despite both running the same medium-to-hard strategy.

What this Austin breakdown really tells us is that Ferrari's SF-26 has serious race pace in the tank. These average lap time figures suggest the car's genuine speed over longer runs is considerably stronger than the final finishing order might indicate. The consistency between Charles and Lewis is particularly impressive, showing Ferrari's machinery is genuinely competitive. Whether this translates into wins in Mexico and beyond depends on nailing both strategy and qualifying, but the underlying pace is definitely there for Ferrari fans to get excited about.
