Antonelli Seizes Seventh Pole of 2026 at Austin as Verstappen Falls Short

Kimi Antonelli has done it again. The Italian driver absolutely dominated qualifying at the United States Grand Prix, locking down pole position for the seventh time this season with a blistering lap of 1 minute 34.035 seconds. On a weekend where he could be crowned World Champion, Antonelli proved why he's in the mix for the title by putting on a masterclass in the final qualifying segment. Max Verstappen and his Red Bull teammate Isack Hadjar couldn't find an answer, with the championship leader nearly two-tenths clear of the rest of the field.

Verstappen managed to secure second place, but it wasn't without struggle. The Dutch driver came up almost two-tenths short of Antonelli's benchmark, with Hadjar slotting into third ahead of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc in fourth. Lewis Hamilton rounded out the top five for Mercedes, while George Russell had to settle for sixth. It was a frustrating result for the British driver, but that's Formula 1 sometimes. Oscar Piastri claimed seventh for McLaren after his teammate Lando Norris had his time deleted for track limits, which knocked the Briton down to eighth.

Track limits proved to be the theme of the entire day at the Circuit of The Americas. Throughout practice and qualifying, drivers struggled to stay within the white lines, with multiple lap time deletions across the grid. Lando Norris wasn't the only victim either. Arvid Lindblad finished ninth but will face a five-place grid penalty for exceeding engine allocation limits. Franco Colapinto and Gabriel Bortoleto also took penalties for power unit changes, which shuffled the grid around in the lower positions.

The qualifying session showed just how tight things are at the front of the grid in 2026. Antonelli's commanding display puts him in perfect position to make his championship bid official on race day, but Verstappen and the Red Bull team won't make it easy. With poles dominating performances and track limits causing chaos throughout the weekend, Austin served up a reminder of just how precise modern Formula 1 has become at circuit limits.
